Sarah, one of our Dallas wedding planners, tells us about Mey + Jason’s wedding that almost didn’t happen. Back in September, Hurricane Odile (the most ferocious one to hit the Baja California) struck and utterly devastated much of the area, with winds up to 125 miles per hour. It caused extensive damage, destroying structures, bringing in floods, and leveling trees and power lines. People were simply focused on surviving.

There was no electricity or drinking water, and people were warned to stay indoors due to looters. Tourists had to be airlifted home as the airports were damaged.

Their destination wedding was to be in Todos Santos, a sleepy beach town an hour away from Cabo that was badly affected. Their venue, Arriba de la Roca, sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Odile had blown out all the windows, taken out all the vegetation around, destroyed furniture, cabinets, the list goes on.

However, in an incredible display of resilience and perseverance, people slowly started rebuilding and repairing. Mey and Jason have been to the area a few times and truly love the place. They decided to wait it out to see what would happen in the two months because they wanted to be able to support the community when they need help the most.

Shelby and Maurice, the owners of Arriba were indispensable in making sure this wedding happened. They did everything they could to ensure Arriba was back to its original glory and two days before the wedding was to occur, they officially opened the doors of their boutique hotel again.

This wedding held a lot of personal details to the couple. They had a very intimate wedding of twenty and had handwritten notes to each guest. Instead of escort cards, tiny frames with pictures of their friends were used to mark each person’s spot instead. There were mad libs and antique keys with tags where guests could leave behind a ‘key’ piece of advice for the newlyweds.

Instead of the groom entering quietly to the side, Jason strutted (yes, strutted) down the aisle to a guitar riff from Metallica. It was so fitting because this couple is a lot of fun. This intimate wedding includes one heck of a view, fire dancers, a surprise mariachi band from the bride to the groom, releasing wish lanterns, and a giant bonfire to end a beautiful day.

This is the aftermath of all the hard work of the truly amazing vendors there. I was so honored to be a part of it! A planner is nothing without the right team of vendors.
